Sheki, Azerbaijan

Posted on January 21, 2023January 21, 2023 by KK

A 7-hour bus ride from Baku brought me to Sheki. The guidebook said it was a pretty place and it was somewhat on my way to Ganja.

A peek into the countryside surrounding the town of Sheki.
The entrance to an actual “caravansaray” – dating back to the Silk Road days where real people, with their horses or camels and wares, came here to lodge.
Inside the caravansaray. These days, it’s been refurbished for modern day travelers to stay in – they get booked up pretty quickly so I didn’t get a chance to stay here.
Palace of the Sheki Khans. Could only photograph the outside, not the inside.
These were painted on under the edge of the Sheki Khan palace roof.
Was walking the streets and happened upon this shop – I was intrigued by the pan of sticky sweet “pizza”, called “Sheki halva” – it’s kinda like baklava. Had to get a piece. Delicious!
Sheki halva. Look at the oozing syrupy goodness.
The mutton and chickpeas in a bowl of soup called “piti” are eaten together, usually mashed. The soup itself is eaten with pieces of bread.
